Is it Time To Replace Your Water Heater?

cold-shower-no-hot-water

Here in Montana, our freezing-cold winters mean you need to be able to depend on your furnace to keep your home nice and toasty.

Although you might not realize it as often, your water heater plays an incredibly important role in your home comfort.

Think about how many times in a day you need water. You start off the day with a hot shower or a pot of hot coffee.

You make breakfast and run the dishwasher to sterilize your dishes. You wash your hands in hot water multiple times a day.

All these activities for your health and happiness are dependent on your home’s workhorse, the hot water heater.

It’s easy to notice even the slightest disruptions to the service your water heater provides. Imagine having lukewarm water when taking a shower when it’s single-digit temps outside or even worse–no water at all.

If you’re beginning to suspect that something is off with your water heater, you may be hoping that you need water heater repair in Gallatin County, MT instead of a replacement. But if you notice one or more of these signs, it means it’s possibly time for water heater replacement.

Lack of Hot Water

When you don’t have enough hot water, you’ll notice! Have any of these situations sprung up in your household recently? If so, this is a red flag that a water heater is declining.

  • Not enough hot water for morning showers
  • The washing machine isn’t getting clothes clean enough
  • The dishwasher doesn’t get dishes clean or stay hot throughout the cycle
  • Water doesn’t seem to be getting as hot as it used to

Age of Water Heater

How old is your water heater? If it’s getting up there in years and its performance is suffering, it may be time for a replacement. The estimated lifespan for a tank water heater is 8-12 years and tankless water heaters may last up to 20 years.

But remember, these estimates are for water heaters that have been repaired and maintained on a regular basis.  If your water heater is older than these estimates, count yourself lucky to have had a water heater last so long. But also consider that it may be time for a pre-emptive replacement.

Water Leaks

Water heaters are built to ensure that the water stays inside a water tank. If water is pooling around the tank or the pipes leading to the tank, this is a problem that requires immediate attention.

Signs of Rust or Corrosion

Water heaters are also built to resist rust and corrosion but they can’t always be expected to combat these forever. If you can see rust on the tank itself or on the outside of your unit near the water inlet, these are tell-tale signs of corrosion. A rusty, corroded tank needs to be replaced ASAP before it springs a leak.
