Our Guide to Changing Your Air Filter

It can be very annoying to see your air conditioning system shut down in the middle of a hot summer day. There are plenty of reasons why that happens. It could be due to a fault with the compressor or a malfunctioning thermostat. Sometimes, all you need is a filter change to get it back into working order.

In this blog, we present a short guide on how to change your air filter to get nice and smooth air conditioning in Livingston, MT.

Locate the Filter

If your AC is causing problems, the filter is the first place you should check. Filters are usually located in the return air duct of your HVAC unit under a plastic casing.

In some models, you can find them in the air handler of the AC.

Remove and Inspect the Filter

The next step is to remove the filter. Many AC problems can be fixed by cleaning the filter carefully and thoroughly. Before you remove the filter, make sure to turn off all the power to the unit.

The filter is generally fitted on the duct with screws or latches that can be unhinged. Remove the filter carefully and inspect itto see if it needs to be replaced or cleaned, or it is can be used for another month.

Clean the Filter

We recommend getting your AC filter replaced or cleaned at least every three months. If you live in an area that gets a lot of dust, have pets, or use the HVAC quite often, the filter will become dirty more frequently.

After you take the filter out, clean around the exposed area with a dry carbon fiber cloth. If your filter is washable, you can also use some water to clean it. Make sure to follow the instructions in your AC manual.

Replace the Filter

If the filter has become too dirty, it may be best to replace it with a new one. There are a couple of types of filters that are used for air conditioners and you can choose the one you like, depending on your AC model.

  • Fiberglass filters are quite common. They are about an inch thick and come in different sizes. They are quite cheap but not the best in terms of air filtration quality.
  • Pleated filters offer much better filtration and they last longer as well. They are made with more durable cotton or polyester that is folded to create the pleated appearance.

Write down the date of replacing or cleaning on the filter.

Reinstall the Filter

Once you have cleaned or replaced your filter, you will need to put it back inside. Most filters have an arrow printed on them to indicate the direction of airflow. If you install it backwards, the filter may block the flow of air, instead of cleaning it.

Gently insert the filter back into the fitting space. Some people mix up the sides and push the wrong face into the holder, which causes problems. Make sure that the correct side is facing upstream for smooth airflow. Tighten up the screws and the job is done!
